At
the beginning of my stay in Argentina 3 years ago I was fortunate
to be introduced to the remarkable Gimenéz Riili family whom
I admire for their talent to combine their own traditions with constant
innovation. Originally, the Gimenéz family is from the south
of Spain where they emigrated from in the XIXth century. Like many
European emigrants in Argentina: they dedicated themselves to the
art of fruit, vegetable and wine growing; The Riili family, from
Italy, was no exception. Both of the families roots are strongly
bound to the cultivation of the soil. Soon, the Riili family founded
their own winery to vinify their grapes, one of the first in Mendoza.
In 1973, the Gimenéz family followed with one of the most
modern wineries with a productivity of 2 million liters. It was
common at that time to produce immense quantities of lower quality
wine.
Eduardo Gimenéz and Susanna Riili not only found to each
other because of their mutual love of the incredible landscape at
the base of the Andes, but because of their common vision of creating
wines with amazing quality in Mendoza. They recognized that limited
grape production and careful selection of the clusters are the best
conditions for the elaboration of quality wine. Today the winery
is managed by their five sons. In addition to the family's vineyards
in Maipú, which are at 800 meters above sea level, the family
also acquired vineyards in the Uco Valley. This Valley is the most
promising viticultural area in Argentina and lies at 1100 meters
above sea level. Norberto Moreno, the winemaker, is fulfilling his
dream of creating wine with grapes of the highest quality, and experimenting
with a number of different terroirs. For me, each glass of their
wine contains the best Argentina has to offer! |
