The
story of Hacienda del Plata is the story of a typical Argentine
“Estancia” (Farm). Built by the shores of the Mendoza
river, at the foot of the Andes mountains, the Hacienda was located
at an important crossroad, a meeting point for shepherds and farriers.
It also represented an obligatory resting spot for herds of cattle
which were led over the Andes to Chile by the „gauchos“
(the legendary Argentine cowboy).
A special atmosphere filled with silence, crackling campfires and
quiet, loyal people who have an intimate bond with nature surround
the Hacienda del Plata until today. Of course a great wine can´t
be missing here! The ancestors of the owner family Gonzalez had
felt this and had begun to plant vineyards around the Hacienda in
the 18th century. Today, these 18 hectares are planted with Cabernet
Sauvignon and Malbec. With the course of time, the family adquired
some more extraordinary parcels in an area close by, 7,8 hectares,
planted with 85 year old Malbec vines whose fruit is exclusively
destined for the Premium Malbec of the winery, the Mayoral Grand
Reserve. For the white varieties as well as for the Syrah the Gonzalez
family picked the adequate terroir in the far eastern part of the
wine oasis Mendoza. On these 18 hectares the varieties Chardonnay,
Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah feel at home since the climate here is
slightly a bit warmer and the soil transmits plenty of minerality.
All wines are made directly on premise, at the Hacienda, which is
equipped with the most up to date winery equipment. The particularity
about the Hacienda del Plata is that Hugo Galiotti, enologist of
the winery, brings forth wines with an unmistakable character; wines
that are created as a homage to it´s beautiful environment
and a way of keeping the bond with nature spirit alive. Expressiveness,
individuality, naturalness and strength characterize the wines that
are given the names „Nevisca“, „Zagal“,
„Arrieros“ and „Mayoral“, all names that
existed in the hierarchy of the “gauchos”. Reaching
from “Zagal”, the young and inexperienced shepherd to
the “Mayoral“, the most noble and respected “gaucho”.
