For
many Amarone lovers the name Speri will probably sound familiar.
It's not without reason. Since 1876 the traditional Italian winery
has been one of the top wine producers from Valpolicella, in the
northern province of Verona. Just as his family made their name
famous with it's award winning wines, Alessandro began drawing attention
to his "Prodigo" wines after only three years of making
wine in Mendoza, Argentina. Everything started when his college
friend Claudio Palchetti told him about the world of Argentine wine
and introduced him to the well-known enologist Attilio Pagli. When
Attilio Pagli agreed to help him with his project in Mendoza, Alessandro
decided to move to Argentina by the end of 2002. He found his ideal
vineyard in "La Consulta," a special area in the Uco Valley,
at a height of 1050 meters above sea level. The proximity to the
Andes mountain range not only adds to the stunning scenery, but
primarily provides dry climate with lots of hours of sun. Centenary
vines at the feet of the mountains are proof of excellent growing
conditions. The temperature difference between day and night give
nearly perfect conditions for the maturation of the grapes. Long,
hot days (34º–38ºC) are followed by cool nights
in the summer (13º-15°). Alessandro gave his wines the
name "Prodigo," because he says he felt a bit like the
"figlio prodigo", the lost son, in the Bible, when he
left his entire family in Italy. Certainly it was not easy for his
family to let him go. Nevertheless, Alessandro was able to make
his dream of producing his own premium Malbec come true.
When
I got to know Alessandro and his wine I was convinced that it
was going to be one of my DOSMALBEC.
